Most health conscious people are switching to brown sugar these days. After the massive buzz about brown rice versus white rice and brown bread versus white bread, it’s time to know that whether brown sugar is healthier or white sugar. Basically, brown sugar is white sugar with molasses and is regarded as raw sugar because it goes through fewer chemical processes. The term raw sugar is used for the sugar that is not fully refined.

According to a report published by the United States Department of Agriculture, one teaspoon of brown sugar contains 17 kilocalories, whereas, one teaspoon of white sugar carries 16 kilocalories.

According to nutritionists, the difference between the two lies only in terms of flavour, colour and the process they both go through.
The statistics say that brown sugar has 95 percent of sucrose (white sugar) and 5 percent molasses, which means that it is equally harmful as white sugar is. So, in terms of health risk, brown sugar is equally bad for diabetic patients and overweight people too.
