Due to a higher supply than demand, the prices of all memories are expected to fall significantly in the coming months.
After a stable period, the price of memory should drop quite sharply from the beginning of 2019 in the component market. This is in any case the prediction of DRAMeXchange, a research firm specializing in this area that has just published a report to this effect. And if we could start to see a slight decline in recent weeks, the reductions could be accentuated in the coming months to go from 15 to 25% .
What is the reason for this widespread decline? Quite simply an overproduction, demand being weaker than supply while semiconductor factories are running at full capacity. Several manufacturers are concerned, such as Samsung or Micron, which are increasing their production capacity by changing the manufacturing process.
Above all, the decline announced by DRAMeXchange concerns all types of electronic memories: RAM, of course, but also graphics memory and flash memory used both in microSD cards and USB sticks as in SSDs. As is often the case in this situation, if the final rates do not go down, we will have more for the same price. The opportunity to boost computers and smartphones at a lower cost!
